Thesis:
From 1914 until the present, World War II has been known as a traumatic war that followed after World War I. World War II has brought worldwide conflicts and has caused massive destruction in Europe. Not only had the war affected Europe, but also areas outside of Europe such as Russia, Japan, United States, and Germany. The effects of World War II on these areas were both positive and negative. More societies began to want national independence,women began to have the right to vote and had more freedom, new technology was created, and medicine was introduced, which aided in the growing population.

Soviet Union:
  • Known as one of the superpowers, one of leading world power
  • Destabilized
  • Sets communist governments (in Poland, Hungary, etc.)
  • Build large and powerful army to defeat Germans
  • Had many good resources
  • Large population
  • A few Baltic nations added
Japan:
  • Cities such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed/damaged by the bombing/blockade during WW2
  • Important foundations were laid for postwar growth
  • Temporarily under U.S. military rule
  • Destruction of their form of government that was present before the war (military controlled Japanese life - TOKUGAWA)
  • Recovered quickly (U.S. aided)

United States:
  • Known as one of the superpowers
  • Anti-communist
  • Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor in 1941
  • Motivated economy
  • New industrial systems built
  • Became the leading military power
  • Dominated world economy
  • Women gained a new status in the society

Germany:
  • Defeated (the Nazi regime)
  • Leaders tried (for crimes-humanity)
  • Divided into 4 zones & split into 2 countries (not unified until 1990)
  • Cities were destroyed from the bombings and many Germans died
  • Financially devastated

France:
  • Weakened in all aspects (economically, militarily, etc.)
  • Citizens wanting independence but France resisted to give independence to the colonies
    • colonies were later successful in gaining their independence
  • Fought to keep their empire

Europe:
  • Bombed by Germans during 1940 blitz
  • Struggled to recover
  • Depended on aid by U.S.
