by Kelly Ngo - Compare colonial administrations of Spanish and English Colonies

Thesis Statement:

During the year 1492, the Americas were discovered by Christopher Columbus. The Spanish and English colonies both settled in the area and their colonies were significantly different in the populations, treatment of natives, government, and main exports.
  • English Colonies characteristics:
    • Colonies were given their own self rule, but were still under the control of the crown.
      • Colonies originally started off as business charter.
    • Natives were pushed back and didn't have land forcefully taken away.
    • There were more woman in these colonies so there were fewer mixed populations
    • Traded indigo and tobacco with the British

  • Spanish Colonies characteristics:
    • Viceroys were representatives of the king who ruled.
    • Social status determined by race.
      • Lack of women in Spanish colonies brought race mixing
    • Natives were taken over by force and used for labor.
    • Basis of economies: sugar and silver
  • Similarities:

The two different kinds of colonies, although settled by different countries, also had a few, if any, similarities. Both the English colonies and the Spanish colonies went through a period of time where they used slave labor as their main forms of labor.
